INTRADA ALPR has been integrated in the backoffice of the WIM-VID system used
by the dutch department of traffic (ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat).
The system is in use since 2001 to identify companies that structurally overload
their trucks.
Selection
WIM/VID
It is often hard to recognize a truck with more cargo than legally allowed.
In the WIM/VID system the weight of a truck is derived from sensory data retrieved
by sensors in the road. In case of detection of an overloaded truck, an image
of the truck is taken from a camera above the road. The license plate is read
with the INTRADA ALPR software and the truck can be taken off the road.
Additionally, all recordings are automatically processed by the system. The
backoffice is linked with the dutch Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (Rijksdienst
voor het Wegverkeer). This link enables the identification of companies
that structurally overload their trucks.
Results
The WIM/VID system has proven itself as an effective tool for law enforcement
regarding truck overloading. The amount of trucks that can be taken off the
road for inspection is limited. With the WIM/VID system, the police can concentrate
their capacity on suspected overloaded vehicles. This increases efficiency;
almost all stopped vehicles turned out to be overloaded.
